Winner of 12 varsity letters, Michele Mancini was the epitome of team play and individual achievement... known mostly for basketball, she also made her mark in track & field and field hockey... five of Michele's letters came in track, with hurdles as her specialty. Starting in eighth grade, no shuttle hurdle relay team she was on ever lost a race, an impressive 5-year span ...
In the spring of 1989 Michele won both the 100 and 400 meter hurdles in the Susquenango Association and Class C meets, then nearly pulled the same double in the Section IV Finals, winning the 100 and placing 2nd in the 400 ... competed in both events at States... entered with 10th best qualifying time (15.4 seconds) in the 100 and graduated with a share of the 400 m school record...ln field hockey Michele proved to be a scoring machine, especially her junior season in 1987 ... was 6th in Section IV in goals, highlighted by a 5-goal game versus Walton...named a Sus All-Star that fall
Lady Warriors won Section IV Class B title in 1988 under coach Mary Morrison... Sophomore season in basketball was memorable, partly because Sidney won the Section IV Class C crown despite a roster of just 8 players.
Getting past Chenango Forks in the Sus was tougher than most of the other post season games - the Warriors & Blue Devils tied for the Western Division title, forcing a playoff in Windsor to determine the winner. Sidney survived that game down the stretch, then trounced East champ Deposit in the Sus League Crossover. .. another nerve-wracking finish came two weeks later in the Class C final versus Elmira Notre Dame ... Michele's two free throws with seconds remaining earned the victory ... was among the first girls in Section IV to score 1,000 points and collect 1,000 rebounds-1,105 rebounds was believed to be the Sectional record at the time
Sus 2nd team All-Star as a soph, 1st team as junior and senior... played for the Central Region Scholastic basketball team in the 1988 Empire State Games ... selected to eight all-tournament teams out of ten played, including MVP of Sidney Tip-off Tournament 1988-89 ... was named Daily Star 1st team All-Star that same season improving from 2nd team the previous year... Shared WCDO Female Athlete of the Year honors with track teammate Wendy Simonds, named Sidney's Outstanding Female Athlete as well
Graduated as class Salutatorian then before heading to Colgate, played for the Central Open Women's team at the Empire Games...Four year career at Division One Colgate was quite different - Michele shot three-balls! She set School records in 3-pointers made in a game (7), season (48) and career (81)...left with the Raiders' 10th best total in blocked shots
Senior season, her Patriot League rankings went like this: 3rd in rebounding, 7th in steals, 5th in 3 point shots made, tied-5th in blocked shots, 11th in scoring, 5th in 3pt percentage. Even more amazing, Michele's final two seasons were played after undergoing complete reconstruction and rehabilitation of her right knee (tom ACL), was dubbed "Colgate's Comeback Kid"
She was the first Female Athlete from Colgate to sign a pro contract ... played with Sparta BBC in Luxembourg... In second pro game, scored 21 points, all from beyond the 3-point arc! ... Named in 2007 to the Section IV Hall of Fame... maintains a busy life with her husband Steve (a former Colgate men's basketball player) and children Emilie and Nicholas... living in Niskayuna, NY..Michele, welcome to the Sidney Alumni Sports Hall of Fame!
