Born Oneonta, New York August 29, 1926; son of Harold G. and Bessie M. Chantler. One sister, Gladys E. (Chantler) Rettberg. Moved to Sidney in 1938. Lived at 23 Smith Street. Played most major high school sports, clerked in A&P store and delivered newspapers, worked at Scintilla. Entered US Navy Reserve in Augusts 1943 prior to high school graduation. Went through Boot Train at Sampson Naval Base, Lake Geneva, New York. Assigned to Fleet Sonar School, Key West, Florida. Then to Naval Training Base, Norfolk, Virginia for destroyer training. Boarded newly built destroyer, USS Heywood L. Edwards DD663 January 1944. Passed through Panama Canal to Pearl Harbor. Spent 19 months in the Pacific Theater (April 1944 – November 1945. Awarded 7 Battle stars and Navy Commendation Medal. Arrived in Seattle, Washington November 1945. Discharged Bremerton, Washington March 1946.

Worked at various jobs until re-called by Scintilla; meanwhile, completed courses required for High School diploma in 1946. Entered Ithaca College 1948 graduated 1952 BS Degree. Married Shirley Ann Tichenor July 3, 1952. Daughter Lynne born January 15, 1954, Daughter Cynthia Marie born Niagara Falls April 1956. In 1956 went to work for Link Aviation, Binghamton, New York. Became Manager of Engineering Administration. Joined Northrop Corporation, Boston, Massachusetts in 1962. Son James Kent Chantler born June 3, 1963 in Framingham, Massachusetts. In 1966 rejoined Link Aviation to head part of Apollo space project. Became Program Director for Lunar Module Simulator. The simulator later was instrumental in rescuing Apollo 13 astronauts from outer space. Became Chief Military Program Manager. Sent to Link Miles, England for one year to help incorporate newly acquired company into the company mainstream and methods of conducting programs. Served as international liaison with foreign companies upon return. Traveled extensively in Africa and Mid-East on business. Joined GTE in Needham, Massachusetts as Assistant Director for Engineering. Main responsibility to support the "Peacekeeper" missile program. Awarded Leslie Warner award for development of system support program for Peacekeeper program. Retired from GTE in 1991. Currently living Walker Meadow Retirement Community at 7 Quaker Way, Westborough, Massachusetts.
