Sidney's first Section Four Hall of Fame inductee, in 1980, was Fran Redmond, a man who is revered in Sidney sports history for much more than wins, losses, practices or games.
Coach Redmond taught boys physical education from 1948 through 1979. Known mostly for his outstanding football teams, "Red" piloted three unbeaten gridiron teams in the days before state playoffs and still claims the most wins of any Sidney coach with 56. He also coached basketball and track. Upon arriving at Sidney he revived a dormant wrestling program.
However, it was the influence he had on young men that most Sidney graduates remember about Coach Redmond. Fittingly, current Sidney students can grasp the concept of Redmond's teachings in two ways: 1) The old Varsity Club and Women's Athletic Association, organizations for letter-winning athletes, were merged to make the Francis L. Redmond Varsity Letter Club. And 2) academic and athletic excellence is honored each year with the Francis L. Redmond Scholar-Athlete Award.
